Iyengar Yoga with Tara

ABOUT

About

Namaste.

Whether this is the beginning or middle of your interest in yoga, you are very welcome. My name is Tara Suilen Duffy. I have practiced Iyengar yoga since 2000 and taught since 2010 in Beijing, Galway, Hong Kong and Taipei, and now Providence.  Sharing some of what I have learned in these 20+ years and seeing how even one hour of yoga a week can bring about a positive change in a student is what inspires me for every class. I feel fortunate to have come across Iyengar yoga at one of my first yoga classes in London. While I tried some other methods, I remain dedicated to this precise style of yoga, named after B.K.S. Iyengar, for the focus on alignment and safety, and for the myriad ways to approach yoga asana, pranayama, and more.  While perhaps many associate Iyengar yoga with bodily alignment alone, in fact, it encompasses the aligning of body, breath, and mind. Safety means this method is accessible for all.

Three years after starting yoga, I began my initial teacher training. As work and life changes brought me from Europe to Asia and back again, I had the great fortune to be able to further my study with many senior Iyengar teachers based in London, Paris, and Hong Kong.  On-going study is crucial to the development of one's own practice, even after one starts teaching. I was fortunate to be able to study with members of the Iyengar family in London in 2002, China in 2011, and Pune, India in December of 2015, 2016 and 2018. I am certified at Level 3 (JI III) in the Iyengar method. I am a member of Iyengar Yoga (UK) and Munster Iyengar Yoga. In my previous professional life, I worked as a journalist and as a nonprofit development consultant in Europe and China.

Geeta Iyengar, daughter of B.K.S. Iyengar, yoga teacher and mentor to so many, passed on 16 December 2018. I wrote a short piece on what it was like to have been among the group of more than 1,200 students she was vibrantly teaching just three days before, and to have been there at the centenary of her father's birth on the 14th. She gave everything she could to her students, right to the end.

TESTIMONIAL

I'm so glad I discovered Tara and Iyengar Yoga. Tara is evidently knowledgeable and able to share this in an encouraging, light and relaxed way.

- Sam Argent, Galway 2019

Tara is the best lyengar yoga teacher I've ever met! She is not only passionate, but patient while teaching yoga. With her guidance, we gradually learnt yoga postures, from easy to advanced, all with alignment. She helped me to build confidence in my practice. Tara cares about her students and always finds a way to help. Highly recommended!

- Yvette Wang, Taipei 2021

Tara is amazing. Her classes are brilliant. Just go!

                                                                       -Michelle Riordan, Lahinch 2017

Tara has the rare gift of being able to quickly assess a student's needs and abilities, and then structure an effective sequence of postures around them, whilst still maintaining a great flow throughout the class. This really helped me after an illness, and enabled me to build up my stamina, flexibility and strength, much more quickly than I would have ever thought possible. This was especially apparent in group classes, where Tara managed to make each student feel like the class was designed for their own personal needs...Something I have seldom found in many years of attending yoga classes all over the world. This alone underlines her sensitivity to the needs of the individual, which really sets Tara apart from the yoga “herd.”

- Nicole Gatehouse, Hong Kong 2016

Tara has a gentle kind approach whilst encouraging & supporting her students to advance & deepen their practice. Tara’s experience is evident & she will always find ways to help students with specific needs or challenges; she is a caring, dedicated teacher.

- Siora, Galway 2018
